London, UK, 20/04/2020 — Detego, a market leader for RFID software solutions for fashion & sports retailers, has announced their new factory solution which ensures that factory shipments are validated on an item-level to prevent shipping errors and provide complete traceability throughout the supply chain. The cloud-hosted solution is part of Detego’s end-to-end RFID software platform which also includes leading products to manage warehouses, stores, smart displays and AI-powered analytics.

Detego developed the solution based on the growing demand for item-level inventory visibility throughout the supply chain, as more retailers continue to adopt RFID technology at the heart of their operations. Detego’s proven success with deployments of RFID software within fashion and sportswear retail stores and distribution centres has naturally continued upstream to the factory where there is a strong business case for traceability and accuracy of shipments. The factory solution provides retailers with the ability to track individual products from source-to-store by verifying outbound carton shipments, helping to prevent shipping errors to distribution centres, reducing human mistakes and improving operational efficiencies.

“Retailers are now adopting RFID throughout their entire supply chain to realise the full potential of the technology, from the factory to the consumer. Detego’s factory solution helps to maximise operational efficiencies at the source whilst providing more visibility of inventory from the very beginning. We now find ourselves in the unique position of being able to offer the only proven end-to-end RFID platform on the market, from factory, to DC, to stores and even consumer engagement in the stores”  says Kim Berknov, Executive Chairman of Detego.

The solution is delivered as a cloud-hosted mobile application which integrates directly with a range of RFID hardware as well as the factory’s ERP system. Detego offers the solution with different modules allowing for a range of processes to be performed in the factory, such as verifying shipment contents against target lists or verifying RFID tags have been encoded and printed correctly. These processes ensure 100% accuracy of shipments helping to prevent costly errors at source and provide more confidence in retailers supply chain operations to ultimately improve customer experience.

As the factory solution is part of the wider Detego platform, retailers will now be able to track every ‘read event’ relating to an individual item/EPC (Electronic Product Code), from the moment it leaves the factory all the way to being sold in the store. This will further help prevent shrinkage in the supply chain, whilst providing complete transparency of an individual item’s delivery time to distribution centres, stores or Direct-To-Consumers (DTC).

With factories in China now back in action, Detego’s new solution is perfect to ensure the visibility of these shipments are on time and accurate to prevent any further costs to retailers in these difficult times.

London, UK, 25/03/2020 — Retail RFID software specialists, Detego, have announced a new solution to support retailers and help them maintain business continuity during the ongoing effects of COVID-19. The solution, available to retailers using RFID, will allow brands to adapt to the increased pressure on their DC / DTC operations as eCommerce becomes their primary sales channel. With it, retailers will be able to utilise efficient RFID processes to drastically increase the speed of handling returns directly from  consumers back into their Distribution Centers.

Detego, who partners with several major fashion retail brands, aims to alleviate some of the pressure on retailers due to the COVID-19 epidemic by solidifying their eCommerce operations and returns process for increased demand. With retail sales down and brick-and-mortar stores being heavily affected by closures and social distancing measures, Detego is anticipating an unprecedented shift to online shopping. Whilst the majority of retailers run eCommerce operations alongside their physical stores, this is typically only around 10-15% of their overall retail sales. For omnichannel retailers, eCommerce has now become the primary sales channel for the foreseeable future. There is already early evidence of this, with preliminary data from Quantum Metric showing that eCommerce associated with Brick and Mortar retailers saw an average revenue weekly growth rate increase of 52%.

This sudden shift to eCommerce will pose significant challenges for many retail distribution centres, as supply chains and operational systems may struggle or even buckle under the increased pressure. The primary challenge that comes with increased online sales is the subsequent increase in returns. While shoppers return only 10% of what they buy in stores, they send back up to 50% of what they buy online. The major capacity concern will be in the increased rate of online orders and will most likely present bottlenecks and stockouts in the returns process.

“The new returns module (part of Detego’s end-to-end RFID platform) strengthens distribution centres by utilising fast and efficient inbound RFID reading of cartons/boxes to verify against a target list based on the returned item from the customer”, – mentioned Nikolay
Vakulich, Product Manager at Detego.

The SaaS-enabled solution integrates with all standard RFID hardware and  WMS (Warehouse Management Systems) to count, verify, display, track and manage inventory moving from the DC/DTC to consumer or wholesaler as well as processing all returns back to the DC / DTC. Additional functionality will also allow retailers to use a ‘quality grading’ system and display product imagery to more effectively identify and sort inbound returns.

RFID-enabled retailers utilising the solution can achieve greater flexibility in ordering and fulfilment due to forecasting of incoming returns/shipments and up to 90% faster processing times. This not only prevents bottlenecks occurring in the supply chain due to unprocessed returns, but it ensures stock is made available as soon as possible upon being returned, reducing out-of-stocks on the webshop. This is in addition to 100% shipping accuracy and verifying the legitimacy of returns using unique digital identity provided by RFID tags.

NRF will also be the first opportunity to experience Detego’s newly implemented Smart Fitting Room application and AI-enabled Smart Shield feature, both of which have experienced recent success in retail stores.

Detego’s cloud-hosted RFID software is employed by global retailers such as adidas, Levi’s and BESTSELLER to track and manage products from production to point of sale. The Detego platform delivers near-perfect stock accuracy, transparency and product availability for retailers, resulting in higher sales and a more frictionless shopping experience for consumers. Visitors to NRF will be able to experience live demonstrations of the software’s core features such as RFID stocktakes, refill and omnichannel reservations, as well as gain insight on best-practise and strategy for digital transformation.

Taking in-store experience to the next level, attendees of the show will be able to experience Detego’s Smart Fitting Room first-hand, which is now live in UK & US stores. The RFID-enabled Smart Fitting Room assists customers by automatically displaying additional product information, size availability and a ‘call-to-assist’ feature which includes having different sizes brought directly to the fitting room. These value-adding services are what continue to drive consumers to shop in-store and will be on display at hardware partner Pyramid Computer’s booth #5860.

For retailers looking to implement RFID for inventory management, Detego’s latest innovation of the AI-enabled Smart Shield has made implementation of the technology into stores easier and more cost-effective than ever. Smart Shield eliminates the need for physical shielding installations within the store by using machine learning algorithms to distinguish tag locations between the back room and the salesfloor. This previous barrier to RFID implementation is now a thing of the past and represents a huge milestone for the technology within retail. The feature has recently been used to great success with the large-scale rollout of fashion brand Vero Moda and will be demonstrated live at NRF by Detego’s Data Scientists at booth #4620.

American fashion brand McGregor New York, that operates out of its Amsterdam headquarter, have implemented Detego’s RFID software platform as part of the brand’s digital transformation and relaunch. McGregor’s use of RFID across their stores and warehouse aims to optimise stock accuracy and support their new omnichannel model, as they continue to open new stores in the Netherlands and Belgium.

After a brief hiatus, McGregor New York are back with a new e-commerce website and their first four retail stores, with more on the way soon. Despite being a ‘legacy brand’, McGregor has committed to embracing new technologies for the fashion industry as part of their relaunch. At the heart of this is their new omnichannel model, designed to more effectively leverage their products and provide more options to their customers such as click & collect and ship-from-store. McGregor sees the Detego platform as a crucial tool to achieve this, as the improved stock accuracy and inventory visibility the software provides is key to delivering reliable omnichannel services to their customers.

McGregor began using RFID alongside partner Detego in February this year, initially implementing the technology within their factories, outlets and distribution centres to satisfy web order fulfilment. With this baseline already secured, McGregor are now rapidly re-establishing their brick-and-mortar presence, making use of Detego’s ‘smart shield’ feature which bypasses the need for physical RFID shielding and means store openings aren’t held back by expensive installations. With this technology in place, McGregor now has item-level visibility across their entire network, ensuring a frictionless shopping experience across all channels.

McGregor’s retail relaunch continues to build momentum, with several more store openings in the pipeline, including three stores in Belgium. The retailer will also continue to digitally expand alongside this. As well as implementing RFID in all upcoming and future stores, the brand is looking to explore future investment in the technology alongside Detego. McGregor’s VP of Digital and Omni-channel, Jurryt van Arend, commented on the RFID project, ‘While we are still implementing RFID, we already see stock accuracy has improved dramatically. This is important not only for our online business, but also for instore replenishment improvements – new features to come are currently being investigated, but may likely relate to supply-chain improvements and improving customer experience.’

The ‘Golden Quarter of Retail’ is one of the most profitable periods of the year, but the cost of living crisis could mean retailers struggle in 2022. What can be done?
Are you already planning your 2023 retail operations strategy? This is how you could future-proof your operations with the help of RFID for retail.

Retail software specialists, Detego, have presented their ground-breaking methodology for in-store product recommendations, helping bring the same quality of cross-selling over from e-commerce and into the physical store. The new AI-based recommendation engine will enable retailers to provide personalized product suggestions utilizing data unique to store locations and point of sale information, without the need for identifying customer profiles.

Cross-selling through related product recommendations has always been a huge strength of e-commerce, with 35% of Amazon’s revenue generated by its recommendation engine (source). In recent years, innovations in RFID-based solutions such as smart fitting rooms and mobile chatbots have opened the doors to automated product recommendations within physical stores. Whilst the technology is now available, there is still one more hurdle between Brick and Mortar stores and effective cross-selling. This is namely the fact that the best recommender systems require vast amounts of both personal and aggregated data to provide effective suggestions, and whilst this is at a surplus in e-commerce, physical stores traditionally struggle with data being limited as well as sparse.

Speaking at the ACM UMAP 2019 in Cyprus in June, data scientists from Detego, who specialise in RFID-based software solutions for retailers, presented their proposed method of data-manipulation for in-store recommender systems with a paper titled: ‘Beggars Can’t Be Choosers: Augmenting Sparse Data for Embedding-Based Product Recommendations in Retail Stores’. The approach involves an alternative algorithm that leverages shopping-baskets and common-item combinations combined with point of sale information. Detego says this allows retailers to provide targeted recommendations with a 6.9% increase in quality, aimed at individual stores, without having to maintain separate models for each location. When combined with the technology to deliver these product recommendations, retailers could see a substantial increase in sales in Brick and Mortar stores, whilst customers will see a more connected and engaging in-store experience, as Detego continues to bridge the gap between online and the physical store.

“Customers who bought this also bought…” is no longer a phrase reserved exclusively for customers of e-commerce platforms. Due to the adoption of RFID-based technologies, such as Detego’s Smart Fitting Room, personalised recommendations can also be presented to customers of brick and mortar stores. Moreover, Detego’s AI-based recommendation engine is tailored towards the specific requirements of fashion retail stores, such as fast-changing and varying product assortments.’ says Matthias Wölbitsch, Detego data scientist.

With Detego now successfully rolling out the Smart Fitting Room application alongside their real-time inventory management software, this latest improvement is another opportunity for retailers to evolve their stores for the future.

Event Summary

Future Stores is a leading Retail conference in the UK, focusing on innovations that improve in-store experience and drive sales.

The event takes place on the 22nd and 23rd of May at Twickenham stadium. As proud sponsors of the event, Detego will be alongside other leading technology and solution providers as we welcome hundreds of progressive retailers and experience-innovators.

Detego will be exhibiting between conferences, showcasing our end-to-end software solutions and the ways they can improve customer experience in stores.

We will also be taking part in the conferences themselves, specifically on day 1 which focuses on thriving in the Era of connected Retail.

Detego will begin the afternoon session, which is split into 4 simultaneous conferences. We will be opening the talks focused on enhancing the In-store experience with digital with our case study:

Presentation: Customers meet the digital store – are there going to be more sales?

What can online stores do that Brick and Mortar stores can’t?

Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate. Through intelligent use of technology, physical stores can finally utilise some of the most powerful tools of e-commerce such as endless aisle and cross-selling through product recommendations. Using innovative features like smart fitting-rooms and chatbots, retailers can not only improve the customer experience but can cross-sell and recommend similar products that are available in the store.

To be able to deliver this however, retailers require certain fundamentals to be in place, namely a high level of stock accuracy, efficient store processes and real-time article availability. We explore all of this and the journey to achieve these fundamentals using RFID.
